MNÆORĪM

MNÆORĪM

A memory that breathes.

Memory often arrives before explanation.

Territory 01 / Orientation

An Institution For Atmospheric Memory

MNÆORĪM is an autobiographical olfactory reconstruction institution studying memory, atmosphere, perception, spatial identity, and sensory traces.

Fragrance is not treated as product. It is treated as a retrieval medium: a way of finding atmospheric evidence held inside a person, a place, or a period of life.

Territory 02 / Spatial Olfaction

Scent Is Located Before It Is Named

Olfaction is spatially organised before conscious recognition. A scent is not only smelled; it is located in memory, space, atmosphere, and emotional context.

Territory 03 / Why Scent

Recognition Arrives Before Language

Scent reaches autobiographical memory with unusual directness. It can return a room, a body, a season, or a threshold before the mind has explained why.

Humid cotton. Oxidised metal. Rain outside glass. Cooling stone. Cedar warmed by evening air. Old paper holding dusk heat. Dust in sunlight. Skin after long travel. Tea steam in winter air.

Territory 04 / Body Trace

The Body Leaves Atmosphere Behind

Body odour is not only hygiene. It is metabolic trace, emotional trace, intimacy signal, social memory, illness signal, and atmospheric residue.

The molecule alone is not enough. The relationship changes the smell.

  • emotional chemosignals
  • memory through proximity
  • scent and attachment
  • infancy and recognition

Territory 05 / The Method

Recall. Recognition. Return.

The method is precise without forcing memory to behave like data.

  1. Recall

Memory fragments are received without forcing coherence.

  2. Recognition

Sensory anchors are mapped against atmosphere, relation, and place.

  3. Return

An olfactory mnemonic reconstruction is composed as a private record.

Territory 06 / The Three Returns

The Emotional Centre Of The Institution

Three wings for memory, self, and space.

Return to Memory

For people, childhood, places, thresholds, objects, seasons, relationships, atmospheres.

Return to Self

For identity, grief, transition, psychological states, becoming, rupture, renewal.

Return to Space

For homes, studios, galleries, hospitality, architectural atmosphere, spatial memory.

Territory 08 / Mnemonic Record

The Research Observatory

Numbered notes accumulate inside the institution as observations of memory, atmosphere, olfaction, and return.

MR / 001

Recognition Before Identification

Odour can trigger autobiographical association before the individual has consciously identified or named the stimulus. MNÆORĪM treats this interval between recognition and explanation as an important part of the reconstruction process.

MR / 002

Atmosphere As Memory Structure

Autobiographical recall is rarely isolated to a single sensory feature. Place, temperature, material, time of day, sound, movement and relationship may return together as part of one remembered atmosphere.

MR / 003

Relational Olfaction

The meaning of a familiar smell is shaped not only by its molecular composition, but by prior association, proximity and relationship. The same odour can therefore carry very different autobiographical significance across individuals.

MR / 004

Spatial Recall Through Scent

Olfactory recall can be spatial. A fragrance may bring back a room, route, vehicle, threshold or landscape rather than an isolated smell.

Founder / Research Direction

Srishti Nautiyal

MNÆORĪM was founded by Srishti Nautiyal, whose academic background is in neuroscience and the life sciences.

Her work focuses on autobiographical memory, olfaction, sensory perception, emotion, and the influence of sensory information on behaviour and decision-making.

MNÆORĪM developed from this interdisciplinary interest as an independent practice exploring olfactory reconstruction and the relationship between memory, atmosphere, place, and perception.
